1 Chronicles 1:1 to 2:17:
1The descendants of Adam were Seth, Enosh,2Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared,3Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech,4and Noah. The sons of Noah were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 5The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 6The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 7The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim. 8The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. 9The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.10Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was known across the earth as a heroic warrior. 11Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,12Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came. 13Canaan's oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites,14Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,15Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,16Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. 17The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 18Arphaxad was the father of Shelah. Shelah was the father of Eber.19Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg--"division"--for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups and dispersed. His brother's name was Joktan. 20Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,21Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,22Obal, Abimael, Sheba,23Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan. 24So this is the family line descended from Shem: Arphaxad, Shelah,25Eber, Peleg, Reu,26Serug, Nahor, Terah,27and Abram, later known as Abraham. 28The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael. 29The sons of Ishmael were Nebaioth (the oldest), Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,30Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema,31Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These were the sons of Ishmael. 32The sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. The sons of Jokshan were Sheba and Dedan. 33The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons of Abraham by his concubine Keturah. 34Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel. 35The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. 36The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, Kenaz, and Amalek, who was born to Timna. 37The sons of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. 38The sons of Seir were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. 39The sons of Lotan were Hori and Heman. Lotan's sister was named Timna. 40The sons of Shobal were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. The sons of Zibeon were Aiah and Anah. 41The son of Anah was Dishon. The sons of Dishon were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. 42The sons of Ezer were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. The sons of Dishan were Uz and Aran.43These are the kings who ruled in Edom before there were kings in Israel: Bela son of Beor, who ruled from his city of Dinhabah. 44When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah became king. 45When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites became king. 46When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad became king and ruled from the city of Avith. He was the one who destroyed the Midianite army in the land of Moab. 47When Hadad died, Samlah from the city of Masrekah became king. 48When Samlah died, Shaul from the city of Rehoboth on the Euphrates River became king. 49When Shaul died, Baal-hanan son of Acbor became king. 50When Baal-hanan died, Hadad became king and ruled from the city of Pau. His wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred and granddaughter of Me-zahab.51Then Hadad died. The clan leaders of Edom were Timna, Alvah, Jetheth,52Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,53Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar,54Magdiel, and Iram. These were the clan leaders of Edom. 1The sons of Israel were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 3Judah had three sons through Bathshua, a Canaanite woman. Their names were Er, Onan, and Shelah. But the oldest son, Er, was a wicked man, so the LORD killed him.4Later Judah had twin sons through Tamar, his widowed daughter-in-law. Their names were Perez and Zerah. So Judah had five sons in all. 5The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. 6The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda--five in all.
7Achan son of Carmi, one of Zerah's descendants, brought disaster on Israel by taking plunder that had been set apart for the LORD. 8The son of Ethan was Azariah. 9The sons of Hezron were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb. 10Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, a leader of Judah. 11Nahshon was the father of Salmon. Salmon was the father of Boaz. 12Boaz was the father of Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse. 13Jesse's first son was Eliab, his second was Abinadab, his third was Shimea,14his fourth was Nethanel, his fifth was Raddai,15his sixth was Ozem, and his seventh was David.
16Their sisters were named Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah had three sons named Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17Abigail married a man named Jether, an Ishmaelite, and they had a son named Amasa. |

Acts 23:11-35:
11That night the Lord appeared to Paul and said, "Be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have told the people about me here in Jerusalem, you must preach the Good News in Rome."12The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound themselves with an oath to neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.13There were more than forty of them.14They went to the leading priests and other leaders and told them what they had done. "We have bound ourselves under oath to neither eat nor drink until we have killed Paul.15You and the high council should tell the commander to bring Paul back to the council again," they requested. "Pretend you want to examine his case more fully. We will kill him on the way."16But Paul's nephew heard of their plan and went to the fortress and told Paul.17Paul called one of the officers and said, "Take this young man to the commander. He has something important to tell him."18So the officer did, explaining, "Paul, the prisoner, called me over and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you."19The commander took him by the arm, led him aside, and asked, "What is it you want to tell me?"20Paul's nephew told him, "Some Jews are going to ask you to bring Paul before the Jewish high council tomorrow, pretending they want to get some more information.21But don't do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to jump him and kill him. They have vowed not to eat or drink until they kill him. They are ready, expecting you to agree to their request."22"Don't let a soul know you told me this," the commander warned the young man as he sent him away. 23Then the commander called two of his officers and ordered, "Get two hundred soldiers ready to leave for Caesarea at nine o'clock tonight. Also take two hundred spearmen and seventy horsemen.24Provide horses for Paul to ride, and get him safely to Governor Felix."25Then he wrote this letter to the governor:
26"From Claudius Lysias, to his Excellency, Governor Felix. Greetings! 27This man was seized by some Jews, and they were about to kill him when I arrived with the troops. When I learned that he was a Roman citizen, I removed him to safety.28Then I took him to their high council to try to find out what he had done.29I soon discovered it was something regarding their religious law--certainly nothing worthy of imprisonment or death.30But when I was informed of a plot to kill him, I immediately sent him on to you. I have told his accusers to bring their charges before you." 31So that night, as ordered, the soldiers took Paul as far as Antipatris.32They returned to the fortress the next morning, while the horsemen took him on to Caesarea.33When they arrived in Caesarea, they presented Paul and the letter to Governor Felix.34He read it and then asked Paul what province he was from. "Cilicia," Paul answered.35"I will hear your case myself when your accusers arrive," the governor told him. Then the governor ordered him kept in the prison at Herod's headquarters. |

Psalm 3:1-8:
1O LORD, I have so many enemies;
so many are against me. 2So many are saying,
"God will never rescue him!" Interlude 3But you, O LORD, are a shield around me,
my glory, and the one who lifts my head high. 4I cried out to the LORD,
and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude 5I lay down and slept.
I woke up in safety,
for the LORD was watching over me. 6I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies
who surround me on every side. 7Arise, O LORD!
Rescue me, my God! Slap all my enemies in the face!
Shatter the teeth of the wicked! 8Victory comes from you, O LORD.
May your blessings rest on your people. Interlude

14The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear it if the spirit is crushed?15Intelligent people are always open to new ideas. In fact, they look for them. |
